Laughless Saint Fishing: Rod and Skill
Fishing is a skill, not a minigame bolt-on
Fishing appears on the character sheet alongside acrobatics, sprinting, swimming, sneak, lockpicking, pickpocketing and alchemy. It is a tracked, levelling skill like the rest — see skills.
That places it in the same category as alchemy: a non-combat system with its own progression, which is part of why the game invites Morrowind comparisons.
You need a rod
Fishing requires equipment. An old fishing rod was bought from a vendor during a playthrough, on a stock list that also included a lantern, a wood spear, an ornate sword and peasant clothing.
So: rods are vendor goods, not quest rewards. If you cannot fish, the first question is whether you own a rod.
The rod showing red
A specific and frequently hit snag, worth documenting because it looks like a bug and is easy to misread. A player who had bought a rod tried to use it and reported:
“It’s showing red. I guess the red background means I can’t use it for whatever reason. I’m not exactly sure.”
They gave up on fishing for that session. What we can say honestly:
- The red state means the rod is not usable in that moment
- NerveLabs has not documented what conditions gate rod use
- The same playthrough repeatedly described the inventory and item-use UI as confusing
The most likely explanation is a positional requirement — needing to be at suitable water rather than inland — but we have not verified that, so we are not presenting it as the answer. If you have confirmed the exact condition, the developers actively solicit reports on their Discord.
Swimming and the Fisherman’s Friend
Fishing’s neighbouring skill is swimming, and there is one confirmed item that boosts it: the Fisherman’s Friend, a unique knife granting +10 to swimming on top of 55 damage and damage over time.
It is one of the better early weapons in the game by raw numbers, and it is obtainable close to the start. Full route on unique weapons.
Swimming is also a practical necessity rather than a side skill. Several quest routes are far easier if you swim along the shoreline instead of walking inland through hostile territory — the trip to the Tsaffon ruins and to the southern island in Moon in the Man both work that way.
What we do not know
To be clear about the gaps: we have no confirmed fish list, no confirmed catch mechanics, and no confirmed use for caught fish beyond the reasonable assumption that alchemy and cooking-style consumables exist. Update 7 added “stone bread” as a joke item that hurts you when eaten, which suggests food is a real category, but that is inference and we are labelling it as such.
