Dark Water Quest and Spongestone Location
The quest in one line
A well in Magdal Rest talks, offers you a drink, and curses you when you accept. Curing it means finding a Spongestone and dropping it in.
Getting the quest: find Bog
The questgiver spends most of his time in the town tavern, called the Form of the Skull. If he is not there, he is near the well — and he will tell you why:
“One more drink. Then I’ll go fetch some water from the well. I am still so thirsty. My thirst must be quenched. And you should go, too.”
Follow him. He leads you straight to the well.
A naming note: the questgiver appears as Bog in the walkthrough we used and as Bok in search-result descriptions of the same video. NerveLabs has published no cast list, so treat the spelling as unconfirmed.
The well will curse you
The well speaks:
“You look thirsty, traveler. How about a drink? Drink deep and let the water wash away your troubles.”
Accepting feels fine — refreshing, even. What you have actually acquired is a curse called Dark Water Taint.
If you would rather not be cursed, the obvious inference is not to drink. But the quest chain runs through the curse, so drinking is the path forward.
Talk to Bronwyn, the alchemist
Bog sends you on:
“Please, speak to my friend Bronwyn. She will know what to do.”
She is the town alchemist and you will need her for other things too (alchemy). Her house is close to the tavern: from the tavern take the main road, head north a little, then go through on the left.
Her solution is one of the better lines in the game:
“I think I have the answer. A well without water is just a hole and there are many ways to accomplish that. A madman purchased my last spongestone and ran west towards the tower sometime ago. I do not know his purpose nor do I think he did either. Find the stone on his corpse, should it still exist. Then drop the stone into the well.”
Her name also appears as Brunwin in another source. Unconfirmed spelling; consistent role.
Where to find Spongestone
The only clue you get is “west, toward the tower.” Here is the actual route:
- Go north to the very end of town.
- Set your compass due west and go straight ahead.
- You will meet a huge rock — go around it, but keep facing west.
- Another rock, then just behind it, three rocks together. One guide calls them small dragon teeth; they are the landmark that means you are on course.
- Around those three rocks you will find a canyon. Descend.
- At the bottom there is a large old tree, and a big entrance to sewers or pipework.
- The madman’s corpse is not reliably there — the guide author found no body and expects you will not either.
- Turn left from the giant pipe. The Spongestone is there, among the mushrooms.
Note the Spongestone was actually missing at launch. Hotfix 4 on 18 August records: “Spongestone was missing and was placed.” If you are following a guide written on day one and finding nothing, that is why — and it is fixed.
Finish it
Take the stone back and drop it into the well. A well without water is just a hole.
The well quest, and the other well
If you searched for a “well quest,” this is almost certainly it. Note there is a separate well reference in the game: a snail near “the drain located near the tower” features in Moon in the Man. Different location, different quest.
