NerveLabs: The Studio Behind the Game
Who they are
NerveLabs developed and self-published The Lantern of the Laughless Saint. They are both developer and publisher on the Steam listing for app 3849000, which means there is no publisher between them and the players.
They describe themselves as a very small team. From the release announcement on 17 August 2026:
“Thank you for the support. We are a very small team and we’ve been working hard for some time now for this day.”
Their support contact is listed as nervelabs.games with a Gmail support address — which is itself a fair indicator of studio scale.
Their other game
NerveLabs’ YouTube channel also hosts trailers for VectorBall, including a Next Fest 2024 trailer. So the Laughless Saint is not a first project, though it is clearly their most ambitious.
The channel’s other notable upload is a short titled in blunt terms about Todd Howard — a joke about making a Morrowind-inspired RPG that tells you something about the studio’s tone. That irreverence runs through the game itself, which press coverage characterised as a “Morrowind-inspired RPG weirdfest.”
The patch cadence
The most concrete thing that can be said about NerveLabs is how they behaved in their first week. Seven builds in five days:
| Date | Build | Notable |
|---|---|---|
| 17 Aug | RELEASED | Launch |
| 17 Aug | Hotfix 1 | Shopkeeper lag, multiplayer saving, quest fixes |
| 17 Aug | Launch Day Hotfix 2 | Assorted reported issues |
| 18 Aug | Hotfix 3 | Over 40 bug fixes |
| 18 Aug | Hotfix 4 | Multiplayer stability, GPU/texture fixes |
| 19 Aug | Hotfix 5 | Hit markers, teammate teleport, rebalancing |
| 20 Aug | Update 6 | Jump spell, companions on map, multiplayer save fixes |
| 21 Aug | Update 7 | New playable race (Uruhan), spellcrafting rebalance, race-change mirror |
Their stated intent, from Hotfix 3:
“We are monitoring all of your reports and will be keeping the update cadence coming rapidly.”
Adding an entirely new playable race four days after launch is not a typical early access pace.
How to reach them
NerveLabs explicitly ask for reports and feedback:
“Please report any issues, feedback, or suggestions in our Steam Discussion or Discord linked below, we are on standby to fix anything that arises.”
Official channels:
- Steam Discussions for app 3849000
- Official Discord — linked from the Steam page
- YouTube (@NerveLabsGames)
- Instagram — “Holy Fool 36”, where they post development updates and lore clips presented as found footage
That Instagram handle is worth knowing about, because “holy fool game” is a search phrase people use when looking for this game and it sends them somewhere unexpected. The lore clips there are first-party material rather than community speculation.
They also ran a Discord giveaway of pizza gift cards on launch day to celebrate, which is the kind of detail that tells you what size of operation this is.
The one technical warning they gave
Repeated across announcements, and worth knowing:
“UPDATE YOUR GPU DRIVERS if you experience a crash after the NerveLabs logo, we are using a state of the art engine that has crashes with older drivers.”
Update 6 added a popup for Nvidia drivers below version 600 for exactly this reason. See system requirements.
