Magdal Rest: Starting Town Guide
Where you begin
You wash up on a beach and walk into Magdal Rest. Everyone here arrived the same way you did, drawn by the same dream, and most do not remember the journey.
It is the hub for effectively all early content, and the landmarks below are what NPC directions reference. Learning them saves more time than any other single thing in the early game.
The town is written Magdal’s Rest in official patch notes. Community walkthroughs frequently say “Magda’s Rest.” The official spelling is the one to trust.
The landmarks
Directions in this game are given relative to a handful of fixed points:
- The tavern — the Form of the Skull. The single most-referenced landmark. Half the routes in the game start “from the tavern.”
- The well. Where Bog goes to drink, and the site of the Dark Water curse. It talks.
- The shop and market square. Between the shop and tavern there is a staircase up to a hut — Chiani is on its second floor.
- The skull. Referenced from the town entrance; Peaches is on that route.
- The gate and the fortune teller. Left at the gate, past the fortune teller, then around — that is the shack.
- The wooden bridges. Behind the tavern, past the alchemist. Hyrum is up the stairs beyond them.
Who to talk to, in what order
| NPC | Where | Gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Peaches | Straight ahead from entrance, toward the skull | Nuisance → your shack, plus free armour |
| The jinn | Behind the shop, through the tavern, right toward the well | The Lost Tome → magic |
| Ramba | Wandering, often the beach | Right Where I Found It → sneak training, a blessing |
| Bog | Tavern, or by the well | Dark Water |
| Hyrum | Past the bridges, up the stairs | Locked Out → Moon in the Man |
| Bronwyn | North of tavern on the main road, then left | Alchemy supplies and training |

Free things in town
Genuinely useful for a level-one character:
- A fine sword hidden in the grass near Peaches
- A full basic outfit from the two skeletons in Nuisance — pants, boots, shirt, leggings
- A blank tome on the crate behind the jinn, if you would rather not do his quest first
- Charcoal in barrels and crates around town
- Your own shack, from Nuisance
Things the town does not tell you
Almost every building has a stool outside it. When Peaches describes your shack as “one storey with a stool outside,” that is not the useful identifier it sounds like. Route on the Nuisance page.
Hyrum’s key is on the table, not the bed, whatever he says.
Taking things from houses is theft, and it feeds the reaction systems (Amphitheater). Mushrooms sitting in someone’s home are still theirs.
The town got better lit during early access. Update 7 records “Magdal’s Rest now much better lit” and Update 6 notes “Magdal has many more lights” — so if you played on day one and found it hard to see, that has been addressed twice.
Leaving town
The three routes out that quests actually use:
- West from the north end — the Spongestone route, past three rocks into a canyon
- West sticking right — toward the river and the snail
- East by sea — swim the shoreline to the Tsaffon ruins rather than walking
